Renaissance (c. 1430 – 1600)

The Renaissance Era marks the beginning of what most people generally recognize as “classical music.” Most music during this period was written for use in Church services, and the era is distinguished by exquisite choral writing. Famous works include Palestrina’s “Pope Marcellus” Mass, Thomas Tallis’s 40-part motet Spem in Alium, and the musically adventurous madrigals of Carlo Gesualdo.
